How to read India VIX
India VIX is NSE's measure of how much NIFTY options expect the index to move over the next 30 days, as a yearly percentage. Divide it by about 16 (the square root of 252 trading days) for the expected daily move: VIX 15.6 means NIFTY is expected to move about ±0.98% on a typical day, and on roughly 2 days in 3 it stays inside that range. VIX rises when traders buy protection and falls when the market is calm. Option prices rise and fall with it, so straddles are dearer when VIX is high.
